About the Artist
My name is Velma Denise Wood McKissic, but I am better known as Hippy McKissic. I am a self-taught multidisciplinary artist who believes that almost anything can become art when we are willing to see it differently.
My work is rooted in imagination, nature, storytelling, and the beauty of transformation. I love working with found objects, recycled and repurposed materials, mixed media, paint, fabric, bottles, and whatever else catches my creative eye. I often look at something that has been discarded or overlooked and wonder, “What else could you become?” That question is where the magic begins.
Art allows me to explore the many different energies, memories, characters, and stories that live within me. My creations are playful, colorful, sometimes whimsical, and often carry deeper meanings connected to nature, community, spirituality, and the human experience.
I call my work Art by Hippy McKissic because it is more than something I make. It is a way of seeing, connecting, healing, imagining, and reminding myself and others that there is beauty in transformation.
Being part of the Hart Gallery gives me an opportunity to share that vision with a larger community, continue growing as an artist, and encourage other people to look at themselves, their stories, and the world around them with fresh eyes.
